Beams

Green Oak

Our green oak or fresh sawn beams are often used by timber framers and builders or anyone requiring large section timber, particularly in the construction and repair of timber framed buildings.

We can cut beams up to 9m in length but please contact us to check for availability if you require anything over 6m in length.

All of our green Oak beams are cut from selected Welsh/English oak logs best suited for the particular job.

After installation green oak beams will begin to dry out and cause shrinkage across the section and the development of surface cracks. This will slightly change the shape and appearance of the beam but in no way will affect the strength.

Semi-dried European Oak

Although the majority of Oak used for construction is green, occasionally it is essential that the shrinkage and movement in the timber is minimised.

Moisture content can vary (approx 25-60%) depending on how long the beams have been cut.

Most of our semi-dried Oak beams are European, which usually have a straighter grain with less knots in comparison with English oak.

We stock a range of sizes and lengths up to 6m subject to availability please call us with your request and we will do our best to meet your requirements

Douglas Fir & Larch

Larch and Douglas fir are becoming common cost effective alternatives to Oak for timber framed buildings, as these softwoods are now universally recognised for their strength to weight ratio.

Similar to Oak we can cut fresh sawn beams up to 9m in length but please contact us to check on availability if you require anything over 6m in length.
